EU to UK Adapter

A British socket is not just a shape, it is an electrical standard. The British type G puts a fuse inside the plug itself, which the European types E and F do not. Before choosing, check which direction you need, a European device in the United Kingdom or the other way round, and whether the adapter keeps a fuse. The details are below the selection. Ireland uses the same type G format.

Two directions, two needs that get confused

Travelling to the United Kingdom or Ireland requires a Europe to UK adapter: your European devices on a British wall socket. Using a device bought there requires the opposite, UK to Europe. These are two different products and they are not interchangeable. This selection contains both directions, and each product page says which one.

The fuse, which the adapter should not remove

The British standard puts a fuse in every plug, rated for the appliance. A shape-only adapter without a fuse leaves your device protected only by the home's circuit breaker, far upstream. On a phone charger, this makes no practical difference. On a heating appliance or a motor, it matters. The model with a 5 A fuse says so in its name.

What the range changes

The point nobody checks: an adapter does not change the voltage. The United Kingdom runs on 230 V like mainland Europe, so there is no problem. But the same reflex applied to the United States, at 120 V, destroys a device that does not accept dual voltage. Look for 100-240 V on your charger before leaving.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an adapter or a converter for the United Kingdom?

An adapter is enough. The United Kingdom and Ireland supply 230 V, the same voltage as mainland Europe: only the shape of the pins changes. A voltage converter is only needed for 110 or 120 V countries, and only for devices that do not accept the 100-240 V range.

What is the difference between an adapter with and without a fuse?

The British standard protects each appliance with a fuse inside the plug. An adapter without a fuse removes this layer of protection. For a charger or a lamp, the impact is theoretical. For a heating appliance, a model with a 5 A fuse is the careful choice.

Does the same adapter work in Ireland?

Yes. Ireland uses the same type G socket as the United Kingdom, with the same voltage. A Europe to UK adapter covers both destinations, as well as Malta and Cyprus.

Which adapter should I choose for a short stay?

The shape adapter, the simplest in the selection, does the job for a few days and devices that charge. Beyond that, you pay for multi-country coverage, a built-in fuse or extra plug compatibility.
