A graphics card or a monitor a few years old often has a DVI socket, while the cable at hand is an HDMI one. This DVI to HDMI adapter screws onto the DVI socket and offers a female HDMI socket: your usual HDMI cable does the rest.
An adapter that works both ways
Digital DVI and HDMI carry the same picture, which lets the adapter work in both directions. On the computer side, it links a DVI graphics card to an HDMI TV or monitor. On the screen side, it links a box, a laptop or a console with HDMI output to a DVI monitor. The screws of the DVI plug hold it in place, even behind a tower PC.

Sound, the only real difference
A DVI socket generally carries only the picture. A DVI monitor will therefore not play the sound of an HDMI source, and a DVI graphics card will not send it to the TV. Sound then goes through the computer’s headphone socket or separately connected speakers. For a TV, an HDMI link from end to end remains the solution that carries picture and sound together.
Frequently asked questions

Is sound transmitted? Generally not, a DVI link carries only the picture.
Does it accept a VGA plug? No, VGA is a different, analogue signal.
